Happy birthday to my daughter today! She is turning 42.
August 1st is the day Lammas or First Harvest. It is usually celebrated around the first wheat harvest but other grains and sunflowers are also ripe for harvest around that time.
I chose Sunflowers as my first topic this month because I want to put some sunflowers on my altar in celebration. Unfortunately for me, there are no sunflowers in our garden this year. All the heads were harvested before they had a chance to drop any seeds last year.
There are several ways to make sunflowers but I chose one of the easiest using egg cartons and straws since they were things I already had on hand. The image above shows another way to do them but as I said I wanted them for my altar so I changed the design so I can do that.
For the centre (the seeds) I had a little trouble deciding how I wanted to make them. I had already decided that I wanted some sort of texture but I didn't want to make them so heavy the straws wouldn't be able to hold them.
I thought about glitter glue but I am not sure I want them to glitter. That said I have a lovely black glitter glue that I haven't used that might work really well. Pebbles & sand both seem as if they would add too much weight to the flowers though I have them as well.
Yellow Orange paint I can mix from the paints I have.
It really is simple to make them although it will work better if the egg carton is empty. I get the paper cartons but I imagine you could do the same with the foam ones you just have to be a little more careful in the cutting and bending
