Whether you're guffawing at a sitcom on TV or quietly giggling at a newspaper cartoon, laughing does you good. Laughter is a great form of stress relief, and that's no joke.

Stress relief from laughter

A good sense of humor can't cure all ailments, but data is mounting about the positive things laughter can do.

Short-term benefits

A good laugh has great short-term effects. When you start to laugh, it doesn't just lighten your load mentally, it actually induces physical changes in your body. Laughter can:
  • Stimulate many organs. Laughter enhances your intake of oxygen-rich air, stimulates your heart, lungs and muscles, and increases the endorphins that are released by your brain.
  • Activate and relieve your stress response. A rollicking laugh fires up and then cools down your stress response, and it can increase and then decrease your heart rate and blood pressure. The result? A good, relaxed feeling.
  • Soothe tension. Laughter can also stimulate circulation and aid muscle relaxation, both of which can help reduce some of the physical symptoms of stress.

Long-term effects

Laughter isn't just a quick pick-me-up, though. It's also good for you over the long term. Laughter may:
  • Improve your immune system. Negative thoughts manifest into chemical reactions that can affect your body by bringing more stress into your system and decreasing your immunity. By contrast, positive thoughts can actually release neuropeptides that help fight stress and potentially more-serious illnesses.
  • Relieve pain. Laughter may ease pain by causing the body to produce its own natural painkillers.
  • Increase personal satisfaction. Laughter can also make it easier to cope with difficult situations. It also helps you connect with other people.
  • Improve your mood. Many people experience depression, sometimes due to chronic illnesses. Laughter can help lessen your depression and anxiety and may make you feel happier.
 So celebrate today by pausing in your busy schedule and take some time to laugh. Listen, watch something funny and just let the laughter flow. Don't have that much time do a 5 min laughter yoga session during your lunch time.



I got thinking that I need a laugher bank like Dr. Madan Kataria suggests on this video at around the  4:00 mark so I created a Laughter Yoga Playlist. I've never tried to share a playlist before so you will have to tell me if it worked.

I am not very good at making friends or keeping them it seems. I do not go outside much, in fact I hardly leave my home unless it is family related. That makes it hard especially since friends expect you to come to them at least once in a while and I find I can't.

Women's Heart Health

February 1st - 7th is Women's Heart Health Awareness Week and I felt it would be remiss of me not to include some conversation about it here given that the professor suffered a heart attack a bit over two years ago and that I am a prime candidate.

Let us start with why I am a prime candidate - Obviously being 100 pounds overweight puts me in the high-risk area immediately. Add in High Chloresterol, physical inactivity, diabetes, post-menopausal and over 55. Since only two of those are needed to put me in the at-risk category that I have six means that I am very high risk. The only way it could be worse is if I still smoked or drank and still lived a high-stress life. Thank goodness for small miracles.

National Pizza Day

I am celebrating today! Several things actually!

1) I like Pizza & I have a perfect reason to make one. It's National Pizza Day! Its going to be a simple one though made with an everything bagel with pizza sauce, pepperoni & cheese. I might even add some onions and peppers for a filling supper.

2) Getting the pantry of my dreams. The one I bought is similar to a cupboard that sat in the house of one of my Uncles for as long as I could remember. It was a bit more delicate than the one I bought though. It looked a little like this one.

3) The Professor as confirmed that we will be going to Ottawa for Valentines, I am over the moon! It won't be the week I wanted but it is going to be four days & three nights.

It means that I can explore the Byward district a bit more than I did a few years ago. Happy Dance!
